VA Aid & Attendance — What It Is and How It Pays for Home Care

Aid & Attendance is a VA pension benefit that provides monthly payments above the regular VA pension to veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily living activities. Many Houston-area veterans qualify and never know it exists.

Who May Qualify

  • Veteran served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a wartime period
  • Veteran or surviving spouse needs help with activities like bathing, dressing, or medication management
  • Must meet net worth guidelines — a knowledgeable specialist can help you evaluate your situation
  • Surviving spouses of eligible veterans also qualify for a separate benefit amount
  • Housebound veterans may qualify even if full Aid & Attendance criteria aren’t met

2025 Monthly Benefit Amounts

Maximum Aid & Attendance monthly payments. Your amount depends on income and care needs.

Veteran & Spouse $2,727 / mo
Veteran (Single) $2,300 / mo
Surviving Spouse $1,478 / mo
Two Veterans (Couple) $3,639 / mo

Amounts subject to change. Based on VA published figures. Contact us for a personalized benefits assessment.

This benefit is tax-free and does not require the veteran to have a service-connected disability. It can be used directly to pay for CareWorks in-home care.

Our Partnership with Veterans Care Coordination

CareWorks has partnered with Veterans Care Coordination, a nationally recognized organization that helps veterans and surviving spouses navigate the VA benefits process and access in-home care services. Together, we bridge the gap between eligibility and the care that follows.

Veterans Care Coordination handles the paperwork and claims process for Aid & Attendance and other VA pension programs. CareWorks delivers the care. You don’t need to navigate this process alone — we guide families from the first conversation through ongoing care.

Houston VA Medical Center & How CareWorks Complements VA Care

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is the primary VA facility serving Houston-area veterans. CareWorks in-home services are designed to work alongside — not replace — the clinical care provided by the VA.

Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center

Address: 2002 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030

Phone: (713) 791-1414

Services: Primary care, mental health, geriatrics, home-based primary care, telehealth, community living centers, and specialty clinics.

How CareWorks fills the gaps: The VA delivers excellent clinical care, but the day-to-day support veterans need between appointments — help with bathing, preparing meals, getting out of the house, and having someone to talk to — often falls on family members who may be juggling jobs and children of their own. CareWorks caregivers step in so families don’t burn out, and so veterans receive consistent daily support in the home they love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions Houston families ask us most about veterans home care and VA benefits.

Yes — in several ways. The VA Aid & Attendance benefit provides monthly pension payments that can be used to pay for in-home care. Additionally, some veterans may qualify for the VA’s Home-Based Primary Care program or other VA-funded services. Aid & Attendance is the most widely accessible route for veterans who need help with daily activities at home. CareWorks can help you understand all available options.
Yes. Surviving spouses of veterans who served during a wartime period may qualify for the Aid & Attendance benefit in their own right. This applies even if the veteran has passed away. The surviving spouse must meet certain income, net worth, and care need criteria. Monthly payments for surviving spouses currently reach up to $1,478. Our team will help you determine eligibility.
No. The Aid & Attendance benefit is based on the VA pension program — not service-connected disability. Veterans who served during a wartime period, meet income and net worth limits, and need help with daily activities may qualify regardless of whether their health conditions are related to their military service.
The VA benefits approval process can take several months. However, you do not need to wait for approval to begin receiving care. CareWorks can start services immediately while the application is being processed. Once benefits are approved, they may be applied retroactively in some cases. Our partners at Veterans Care Coordination work to streamline and expedite the application process wherever possible.
Yes. Transportation to and from VA appointments is one of our most frequently requested services. Our caregivers can drive your veteran to the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center on Holcombe Boulevard, as well as to community-based outpatient clinics in Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland, and Cypress. We coordinate scheduling to help ensure on-time arrival.
