Home Care for Houston Veterans —
Honoring Service with Dedicated Support
Houston is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the United States. Many veterans and surviving spouses are entitled to in-home care benefits they don’t know about. CareWorks partners with Veterans Care Coordination to connect eligible veterans with the care they have earned.

Two Ways VA Benefits
Pay for Home Care
These are separate programs — understanding the difference helps your family choose the right path, or use both together for more hours of care.
Path 1 — Aid & Attendance Pension
A VA pension enhancement that provides monthly tax-free payments to veterans or surviving spouses who need help with daily living activities. The veteran receives the payment directly and uses it to pay CareWorks.
Path 2 — VA Community Care Network (CCN)
The VA pays CareWorks directly for authorized home care visits through TriWest Healthcare Alliance. Requires VA healthcare enrollment and a referral from a VA doctor. CareWorks CCN contract is currently under TriWest review.
In-Home Care Services
for Houston Veterans
Flexible, dignified support that works around the veteran’s routines, preferences, and medical needs.
Personal Care Assistance
Hands-on support with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and mobility — delivered with dignity and respect for the veteran’s service and independence.
Companion Care
Meaningful conversation, social engagement, and light activity support to reduce isolation — especially important for veterans living alone or with limited family nearby.
Transportation to VA Appointments
Reliable, timely transportation to the Houston VA Medical Center, CBOC clinics, specialist visits, therapy sessions, and pharmacy pickups across the Houston metro.
Memory & Dementia Care
Specialized in-home support for veterans experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia — structured routines, patient redirection, and safety-focused care at home.
Homemaking & Light Housekeeping
Meal preparation, laundry, grocery shopping, and light tidying to keep the veteran’s home safe, organized, and comfortable.
Medication Reminders
Ensuring veterans take medications as prescribed — especially important for those managing complex VA medication regimens at home without daily oversight.

Understanding Each Program —
What They Cover & How They Work
These two programs come from completely different parts of the VA. One is a pension — the other is healthcare. Both can pay for CareWorks services, but through very different paths.

How Veterans Can Maximize Both Benefits
Many veterans qualify for both programs. Using them together gives you the most hours of care at the lowest cost to your family.
Enroll in VA Healthcare First
Visit va.gov/health-care/apply or call 1-877-222-8387. This unlocks CCN access and gives you a VA primary care doctor who can authorize home care visits.
Apply for Aid & Attendance
Call CareWorks — we connect you with Veterans Care Coordination who handles the A&A application at no charge. Start care with CareWorks immediately while you wait for approval.
Ask VA Doctor for H/HHA Referral
At your VA appointment ask specifically for a “Homemaker / Home Health Aide referral through Community Care.” TriWest authorizes the visits — VA pays CareWorks directly for those hours.
Result: Your CCN authorized hours are covered free by the VA. Your Aid & Attendance monthly payment covers additional hours at CareWorks’ private rate. Many veterans end up with 20–30 hours of weekly care with minimal out-of-pocket cost.
